Wonderful Disaster - Week one, Michelin

Although Michelin is a highly American friendly company, there are still some stark realizations that any American person working there must come to terms with to be successful. In my short time, I’ve made and said done all the wrong things, to finally land in almost the right place. At least along the way, I had a lot of laughs.

May 9, First day at work and the chicken disaster

Overwhelmingly, exhaustingly, amazing. During the first day at Michelin in the purchasing department, my boss took me around to two floors of people (around 200 people) to introduce me to each and every one. Great in Theory, exhausting in practice. I was soon to learn that this action is an important Michelin habit, but at the time, I felt special. Anyways, during each interaction of the morning, I conversed in French, unusually nervous, stammering out my introduction.

One great thing about being in a large company is that there are several interns. For lunch, some of the others invited me to each with them in the cantine on the Michelin campus, and of course I said yes—I would do anything for an opportunity to practice my French. The food looked deliciously appetizing, and thus I took a great big helping of what I thought was BBQ Chicken and took my place among the chattering group….except a few bites in, I noticed an unusually taste. I wrote it off as “French chicken just tastes different.” But then, the texture seemed weird. HMM? Strangely textured,French chickens. Less likely. I finally decided to ask another intern exactly what I was eating, when he promptly replied by laughing and saying he thought it was really strange that I had chosen stomach. Let’s just saw that I read carefully now before picking meals, yum.

All-in-all, it was an incredible wonderful day. I accidentally ate intestines, or stomach, and it just goes to show, that FLEXIBILITY is key! I ate with the interns at lunch, and made some new friends. We went for drinks afterwards and one even came to my house for dinner. I sweat in my non-air-conditioned, no internet office all afternoon, and left at 6. Two hour lunch breaks, are bizarre! All-in-all, good day!

Day 2, kisses

My American spirit unfortunately shines through quite frequently in France, which is not always bad, but makes adjustments, funny. If you don’t know already, people in Europe greet each other with a kiss, or as it’s known here, le bise. It is one of my favorite traditions, yet in almost 5 months, I still haven’t mastered which way to go first, or who gets two and who gets three, thus, this is sometimes a cause of anxiety.

In the morning, it’s very important in a French busines to say hello to EVERYONE with either a handshake for men, or le bise for women. It is slightly offensive to people when you don’t. I didn’t know this. I come in and sit down at my desk, and give a little wave to the 12 other people in the room. 5 Minutes later, the whole room had passed by my desk, explaining that you had to greet everyone, every morning.

Day 3, Lunchbreaks

So I went to dine in the cantine once again with the other interns, leaving the office around noon. We had finished lunch around 1:00, and I was ready to head back, but they others kept lulling around. I finally said, I think I need to go back, I’m going to be late. They all just laughed and said no way, no one will be back yet. But I was fresh on the job, and didn’t want to make a mistake, so I went back, and ended up waiting in my bosses office for another 45 minutes.

Note to self: Lunch in France last two hours, enjoy it.

Day 4, Service in France.

Example of Service, In America, everything is on ‘’our time.’’ we are selfish. Today I went running at lunch with some of my collegues, which in and of itself was really great. I was exhausted and happy afterwards, however, one of the guys wasn’t feeling great afterwards. So we all went to lunch and returned to the office and he decided to call the Michelin doctor. The doctor wasn’t there but 20 minutes later, 5 people arrived. 1 Doctor, 1 nurse, 2 guys in security outfits carrying medical PACKs, like they are about to go hiking, and finally one other guy who, I’m not really sure what his purpose is…but he was trying to look important. They entered our office, and took away my colleague, like he had a terrible contagious disease. I choc it up to personal service, and a well-established healthcare system, but in the moment, It was hilarious..

Day 5, Frazzeled.

This day just started out hectic.

1.I arrive at work to realize I had forgotten my USB key with all of my work on it at my house.

2. I walked into the men’s restroom, I blame that on the sun, which was blinding my eyesight.

3. Went to lunch with my colleagues, knowing I had a meeting at 1:45, which I honestly believe I could arrive in time for. But once again, note to self: Lunch in France takes two hours.

ALL –in—All: Even after all the mistakes, I couldn’t be happier with my work. I met some great friends, I work for a wonderful boss who accepts nothing less than the best, and I work for a great company.

Just thoughts for today.

If there's one thing I've learned in France, it's that I'm an eternal optimist. I can't help it, but sometimes I begin to wonder in the far reaches of my blissfully delighted mind, if I've seen too much beauty. Every time that I go to a new place, I am overawed by beauty and joy, but is there a limit? Limit to our happiness, limit to our pleasure? I hope not!

Anyways, I think about this a lot because Europe is my favorite place in the world...I'm definitely American, but I LOVE the European way of life, and especially now, the French way of life, but sometimes I've come to find that while there is such great beauty here all around me everyday, I no longer can recognize it.
This leads me to beg the question, why?
Was my first reaction of awestruck dumbness just a naive consequence my wonder for adventure and new places, do we lose our love of beauty by the gradual desensitization, do we run out of capacity for beauty? Big unanswerable questions.

All that to say, Life in Clermont-Ferrand is going well. This week, we have our final exams, we've taken 3, and 2 more to come. I have another interview with Michelin tomorrow, which will determine my actual post within the company. I have some make-up posts coming this way soon, with everything from the end of spring break, my mom's visit, my crazy 20 hours in Ireland, and a wonderful visit to my beloved Oxford! For now, there's some teaser photos for what's to come.
Vous me manque, je vous aime.

Jenny

Barcelona Part 1 of Spring Break extraordinaire!

READY...SET...GO!!!!
And this is where the story begins, Barcelona!!
Thursday: our first signts and sounds of Barcelona, aside from the airport, were the beach situated RIGHT NEXT to our hostel!
We arrived early that morning to beautiful weather and to this perfect site!
Good omen for our spring to begin with! Julia and I set out to explore the town, so after a walk on the beach, we got a snack of Greek food, then took a LONG walk to La Sagrada Familia. On the way, we passed the Arch de Triumf spain style and a stadium where there used to be the "torro, torro" events! Le Sagrade Familia in my favorite church...only second to St. Peter's basilica in the Vatican. Gaudi's Greatest work is still underway, since he never finished it himself, and it's definitely made HUGE progress since I was there 3 years ago! These pictures don't do it justice!

After Sagrada Familia, We caught a bus into the center of town to see a few more things, shop, and head back to the hostel to rest before going out. We got a little dolled up and met our fellow Spanish tracker (Rasa, Ashley, Morgan, Travis, and Liz) for a yummy dinner of Paella!

Friday: We started our Conference (the real reason we can to Barcelona; however, definitely not the only reason).

It was hosted at the Harvard of Spain, which was an absolutely Gorgeous school on top of a hill in Barcelona. The conference was called "Doing good, Doing well" Concerning the subject of sustainable development. It was a very nice conference, but exhausting. The evening we has a HUGE wonderful dinner at a restaurant named citrus, right across from Gaudi's house. We dined with our Spanish Trackers once again, then headed home for a much needed good night's rest.
Saturday: Day 2 of the conference. Heard some great lectures and watched several business competitions. Definitely inspiring for my future, and I was a little jealous that I couldn't compete. That Afternoon, we left a little early to get in a little bit of siteseeing as well as conferencing.
We found the Boqueria Market where I went picture crazy. Everything had vivid colours and Brilliant vitality! Irresistable to anyone with a camera.
Can Anyone find Waldo??

Anyways, after this, I witnessed maybe my favorite part of Spain. So wonderful I was actually crying with joy (maybe I shouldn't admit this, but I'll pass it off as my "soft side"). We came upon a group of older people doing a tradition dance of Spain. The most adorable and beautiful thing I've ever seen! I added two short videos, and I apologize that they are sideways...

After this Travis Julia and I took a rest at a local cafe, walked around a bit more, and then headed to join the others. Meet Travis and Julia!
The final eventful part of our day was when Travis Julia and I joined the rest of our compadres in Spain for dinner at a tapas restaurant. The food was incredible, so after a couple rounds, we ordered squid...shown below. While they were quite tasty, they should have put a warning label, that it's possible for them still to "ink" on you. So all of the sudden, my friends burst into raucous laughter...I tried to smile along with them even, thought I didn't get the joke. It wasn't until a few minutes later when I realized that my Whole mouth was black! EW! I didn't eat much after that, but it made for a great story...
The evening ended well with lots of laughter and sad farewells! Until next year!!

Barcelona=success! Now onto Italy!

Is this Real life?

So some days, I'm quite convinced that I'm still dreaming. The past week was well, a week of that feeling exactly.

We had Winter Break this past week, so Julia, Lisa and I went on an adventure.

Here's the Brief summer of the week:
Thursday-Sunday: conference in Barcelona
Sunday: Milan
Monday: Cinque Terre
Tuesday-Thursday: Florence
Friday-Sunday: Strasbourg
I'm going to send out updates on each city soon, but I thought I'd start with my thoughts for the day.

Today I saw a man, who could barely walk. Every step was painstakingly slow and deliberate. It made me think of how quickly I can walk, just how easy it is for me, and how if I were that guy, I don't know if I would want to walk, take the effort. But he does, slowly and deliberately, because there are so many great things to see and opportunities to take advantage of us.

If Life get's better than this (which the optimist believes it will) than I think my overenthusiastic heart just might explode with joy. Here's to hoping...

Look for my Spring Break updates soon!!

My EuroTexalina Weekend!

WELCOME TO MY WONDERFUL PARIS WEEKEND!
So this past weekend, I ventured to Paris to meet up with some of my Oxford girls, Ashley Close, Allye Foster, and Lizzie Elston. You know those times when all your worlds collide, that was this weekend. My Carolina amie Ash and my two west texans, who all go to ACU met me in my new world...France!
So I arrived late Friday night and met the girls at Notre Dame. Yes, this is why I love France, you can say things like "oh yeah...we met up by the eiffel tower, or next to the louvre." Anyways, we went for a late French dinner at a restaurant au cuisine francaise. The girls tried a plate of Fromage and I got my typical Chevre salad. As is normal in France, our meal lasted forever, so we returned pretty late to the hostel.
In Front of the Louvre
Saturday:
We woke up a little late, and had a panicked trip to reach the Eiffel Tower to rendez-vous for the flat-tire bike tour. We BARELY made it on time, after sprinting through the courtyard of the tower.
We bike-toured it until around 3, seeing some awesome sites, and mostly just laughing a lot.

Ash and Lizzie

My Bike!!
Peace Memorial (Ironically it is the most terrorized memorial in the world)
The locks of love on Bridges in Paris!

The sky after the bike tour looked a little questionable so we decided it was museum time! We headed to the Musee d'Orsay. Definitely my new favorite musee. They had a Van Gogh Exhibition, along with Monet, Manet, and many more! The best part about it...Gratuit! FREE!

I tried to be serious like Van Gogh, but it didn't work
Again, in True French Fashion, we took a coffee break after the musee, to give our feet a rest. Then headed toward the Eiffel Tower for what we were soon to find out was going to be the best night ever!

C'est Magnifique!!
Perfect View of Paris from the top
Wildcat Tower??

I took about 1000 pictures of the tower, because it's my favorite part of France, and probably my favorite monument in the world.
After going to top of the Eiffel Tower, we were on our way down and they elevator manager said, "cette nivel a le cuisine et le patinoir gratuit." Did my ears deceive me? Free Ice Skating on the Eiffel Tower?? Why Yes? The 4 of us literally sprinted out of the elevator to the Ice Skating rink situated in the second floor, for one of the most surreal moments of my life. We skated for a while, get hit on by a very strange man working the shoe booth, and the set off for a nice French Dinner to finish our wonderful day!

Patinoir sur le Eiffel Tower
Sunday:
Sunday, was nothing too crazy. We woke up and headed for mass at Notre Dame. It was definitely cool, but it's not really a place of worship. I had a very long, incomprehensible service to sit through, so I did a lot of thinking (reflechir beaucoup). There are so many churches in Europe, yet so little religion, only habitual attendance for the sake of personal historic value, but for the purpose of worship. But that's a whole other blog post for the future...

After ca, we went on our great hunt! The hunt for Moulin Rouge. First, we ascended about 10000 stairs to reach La Sacre Coeur, a magnificent église that overlooks the whole city! After a brief stay here, we headed back down the mountain to spend a few brief moments at the Moulin Rouge...and more importantly, a yummy candy shop!

Afterwards, My Eurotexalina girls had to head back, and so did I.

It was a fantastic weekend and It could not have come at a better time! Hopefully this won't be the last opportunity to meet up in France!
For now, Au Revoir!

One Fine Day

So here's the story of one fine day:

So this morning, we woke up ready to take our first test in Langue Francaise, when I received a phone call from our professor, saying she had sick kids and had to cancel class. At first I was a little annoyed that I was already up and dressed for the day, but then I realized, I had a WHOLE free day ahead of me!

First, me and the roomies did some laundry, much needed and much fun!

We came back to the house for some downtime/catch up time. I got a lot of useless things done like blogging and editing every picture possible so, Around 13:00 I ventured to the mall to print some pictures. Alas, picture machine wasn't working, so instead, I decided to hit up the park

What i have failed to mention thus far is that we have had a whopping 50 degrees here in CF, which is both unusual and amazing!

La Recette joined me there with a diet coke, and pure bliss as we layed in the sun for an hour or so!
Afterwards, we had a meeting at l'ecole, where we discussed internship possibilities (which was definitely a lift to the spirit) and then we headed for our big adventure...the mountain climb.

So noah (le Bucheron) has been telling us about this park we have to visit. He warned us it was uphill, but I didn't realize it was actually up a mountain. So we ventured (all the while I'm in kitten heel flats) up the mountain, I can't remember what it is called exactly, to this incredible park on top of the hill where you can literally see all of CF.
about half-way up the mountain today

The walk with friends was enjoyable, and the view from the top has breathtaking. I'm thankfully reminded so frequently of all the beautiful sites God put on this earth, and today was just a reminder to take advantage of those "fine days." and Oh yea...we found a slide...I'm in love!

Oh yeah...I live here!!! The church in the middle is La Catedral du CF
The end to the perfect day was Shrimp Scampi and rice, with Fromage Cantal for dessert! Parfait! Tres Bien!
